Attendance
Regular school attendance is essential if children are to achieve their full potential. Research commissioned by the Department for Education shows that missing even a single day of school can reduce a child’s chances of achieving good outcomes, potentially impacting their future life chances.
At Burston Primary School, we believe that regular attendance enables children to make the most of the educational opportunities available to them and supports the development of motivated, ambitious and resilient learners. We value every child and are committed to working in close partnership with families. As outlined in this policy, we will work proactively with parents and carers to identify the reasons for poor attendance and, wherever possible, resolve any difficulties.
We recognise that attendance is a shared responsibility across the whole school community. Our Attendance Policy should not be viewed in isolation; it underpins all aspects of school improvement and is closely linked to our safeguarding, anti-bullying, behaviour and inclusive learning policies. The policy also takes account of the Human Rights Act 1998, the Equality Act 2010 and other relevant legislation.
It is a legal requirement that children attend school regularly and arrive on time each day. Attendance at Burston Primary School is excellent, and we are proud of the commitment shown by our children and families.
Parents and carers are required to inform the school if their child is absent. Where possible, advance notice of known absences, such as medical appointments, is appreciated. Children should be encouraged to attend school whenever they are well enough to do so.
Government guidance regarding children taking time off school during term time has changed. In most cases, holidays will not be authorised and will be recorded as unauthorised absences on a child’s attendance record. This may result in a financial penalty being issued. Parents and carers are therefore requested to complete the school’s absence request form at least four weeks in advance.
