Vision & Values
At Burston Primary School, our vision is to nurture and inspire our children to grow into loving, confident individuals. We are committed to fostering deep curiosity and a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, encouraging every child not only to meet but to exceed their academic potential.
The foundation of education in our village school has always been the strong, close-knit relationship between the school and its community. We hold the ethos, values and heritage of Burston Primary School in the highest regard, honouring our rich past as we look forward with confidence to a vibrant and ambitious future.
Our commitment to this vision is unwavering. We strive to provide an educational experience that empowers every child to reach their full potential and develop a genuine love of learning that will stay with them throughout their lives.
The child-centred approach championed by Annie Higdon during the Burston Strike School—the longest strike in history—continues to inspire and shape our values today. Her legacy is reflected in our MARK values:

M — Motivated
Annie’s passion for education and justice motivated her pupils to strive for more, even in the face of adversity. At Burston, we nurture children who are curious, driven and enthusiastic about their learning, believing in their ability to succeed.
A — Ambitious
Annie identified talent and inspired her pupils to achieve academic heights that were exceptional for their time. We share this belief that every child can excel with the right support, encouragement and high expectations.
R — Resilient
Throughout the Burston Strike, Annie guided her pupils through extraordinary challenges, modelling strength and determination. We aim to build this same resilience in our children, helping them persevere, adapt and grow.
K — Kind
Annie’s nurturing, inclusive approach taught children to express their feelings and opinions while remaining open‑minded. Her compassion lives on in the kindness we promote across our school community — in relationships, learning and everyday interactions.
A Living Legacy
Annie Higdon’s story is not just a chapter in our local history — it continues to guide how we put children at the heart of everything we do.
