Our Curriculum Vision:
After conducting consultations with staff, pupils, and parents, several key themes have emerged regarding the desired characteristics of a new curriculum. The following rationale outlines the reasons behind the proposed changes based on the feedback received.
Pupils expressed a desire for a curriculum that promotes active learning rather than being confined to desks. Research consistently supports the benefits of active learning in enhancing student engagement, motivation, and knowledge retention. By incorporating more hands-on and experiential activities, the new curriculum aims to provide a dynamic learning environment that caters to different learning styles and encourages student participation.
Pupils showed a particular interest in environmental matters, reflecting their concern for the planet's well-being. The inclusion of environmental education in the curriculum aligns with their interests and helps cultivate responsible and environmentally conscious citizens. By integrating topics related to sustainability, climate change, and ecological awareness across different subjects, the curriculum fosters a sense of environmental stewardship amongst students.
Real life experiences:
Parents expressed a desire for their children to have real-life experiences as part of their education. They recognise the importance of practical application and the development of essential life skills. The new curriculum aims to incorporate opportunities for students to engage with the real world, such as field trips, community projects, internships, or simulated work experiences. These authentic experiences enable students to apply their learning in meaningful contexts, enhancing their understanding and preparing them for future challenges.
Staff members expressed a need for more time to delve deeply into each subject. A curriculum that emphasises exploration allows teachers to adopt a more comprehensive and immersive approach to teaching. By allocating more time to each subject, teachers can cover topics in greater detail, encourage critical thinking and creativity, and provide opportunities for students to develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
Drawing upon the research presented in "The Monkey Proof Box," the new curriculum considers the concept of authentic outcomes. Instead of focusing solely on traditional assessments and exams, the curriculum places importance on real-world applications and meaningful projects that reflect the skills and knowledge students will need beyond the classroom. This approach encourages students to engage with the subject matter in a practical and meaningful way, fostering a deeper sense of purpose and achievement.
